How Is Red Wine Made?

Introduction to Red Wine

Red Wine is a very popular drink throughout the world. With many different producers of this drink and many varieties available in supermarkets and wine stores, many of us give little thought to the process that is involved in making wine. Most of us know that black grapes are used for making red wine… but how do winemakers make the red wine that is so easy for us to buy today?

Step One

Depending on the content and the seasons, grapes usually begin to ripen in late August and September. Once ripe, the winemaker will taste the grapes to measure the sugar content. The sugar content in the grapes lets him know when the right time to harvest them for wine is. Once ready, workers at the vineyard will hurry around to harvest all of the grapes as quickly as possible. The grapes are placed into bins which are taken to the winery to be crushed.

Step Two

Once in the winery, the picked grapes are carefully put through a crusher, which breaks their skins. The crushed grapes then continue on to a fermentation vat. The stalks of the grapes are discarded at this point (or not) depending on the type of wine that is being produced. The fermentation stage can take up to as long as four weeks, again depending on the type of wine being made. Fermentation temperatures vary depending on the type of wine.

Step Three

To produce the more popular ‘soft red wines’, the fermentation process lasts an average of five days. To create this type of wine, the vats are sealed which enables the carbon dioxide that is trapped inside to ferment the grapes at a faster speed. The length of time the fermenting process occurs, generally determines the colour of the wine. Once the fermenting process is over, the weight of the grapes is enough to squeeze the fermented juice into casks.

Step Four

The remainder of the vat then returns to the press to be crushed again. This makes a highly tannic wine. Once pressed the remnants may be added to the previously made wine or mixed in another barrel for a second fermentation process to occur.

Step Five

Once in the casks, the wine is then stored for a certain length of time depending on the make. Fine wines are generally stored for around one year, before being bottled and arriving on our shelves in the supermarket. Egg white is introduced to the wine, which drags yeast and other solids to the bottom of the barrel, before being filtered and then bottled. Once bottled, some wines will immediately be sent out for distribution; whereas others benefit from another ageing period where they are left alone for a certain amount of time before distribution.

So next time you go to a supermarket and pick up a bottle of your favourite red wine, have a think about how it got there in the first place. If this article has interested you enough, there are a number of wineries worldwide who are happy to give their customers a wine tour and show them the procedure step by step.
